COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Kate Benedict Mystery Series Vol. 1-4,” BY AUTHOR, Carrie Bedford

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

ABOUT THIS COLLECTION:

“FOUR” TRADITIONAL BRITISH MYSTERIES…with a metaphysical twist—at an out-of-this-world price!

Meet Kate Benedict—a promising young British architect who solves mysteries on the side. And she has an edge—an unusual, supernatural talent: she sees mysterious, swirling, death-predicting auras hovering over the people around her. She uses these paranormal powers to save her aura-ridden friends, neighbors, and coworkers who are oblivious to the danger they’re in—and they never believe her. Everywhere Kate turns she ends up with a deliciously traditional cozy on her hands: whether she’s working at her elegant office in rainy London or traipsing around a grand Scottish castle during a weekend getaway, Kate’s always knee deep in intrigue. Now available as a complete box set, this irresistible murder mystery series is like candy for international suspense armchair travelers. This series is a perfect pick for those who like their cozy female sleuths smart, savvy—and a tad psychic.

THE AURA
Life spins out of control for Kate Benedict when she begins seeing a dancing aura above certain people’s heads that seems to signal death. Suddenly she’s psychic. But psychic’s not acceptable in her circle, where the supernatural is strictly for the superstitious. Yet…people close to her are dying.

Kate’s attempts to discuss her newfound metaphysical gift are met with eye rolls; she can’t even tell the Scotland Yard detective who’s investigating the death of a close friend, Rebecca Williams. And now Rebecca’s neighbor has an aura.

DOUBLE BLIND
Two politicians have the death-predicting auras Kate can see. The only way to get to the two pols is via her old friend, DCI Clarke; yet her warnings go unheeded, and even her best friend, Anita, refuses to believe in the auras’ existence—even when one appears over her boss. And then Anita develops her own aura.

THE FLORENTINE CYPHER
What began as a quiet dinner date with an old childhood friend turns into a manhunt when Kate arrives at the rendezvous just in time to find her friend Ethan disappearing into a taxi. Kate is alarmed to see the distinctive swirling pattern above his head. After receiving a series of cryptic text messages, Kate looks for Ethan at his sister’s house in Florence, but whatever danger threatened Ethan in London has followed her to Italy—his sister Claire has a matching aura! Kate and Claire go on the run, constantly watched and followed, repeatedly threatened and attacked, never knowing whom they can trust.

THE SCOTTISH CONNECTION
Kate is off to a glamorous weekend party in Scotland at the formerly grand castle belonging to the uncle of her boyfriend Josh. But the festive occasion turns solemn when Kate notices an aura above the head of Josh’s beloved Uncle Fergus. Kate can sometimes avert disaster –if she can discover the source of the danger. Otherwise, Josh’s favorite uncle will die in a matter of days.

Thus is the scene set for a deliciously traditional British cozy with a touch of the paranormal thriller—complete with ghostly characters from the past; medieval weapons collection; a ruined, closed-off wing of the castle; plus a vaguely menacing assortment of servants and locals and a cast full of dodgy house guests, all wrapped up in mysterious Scottish gloom… warmed by a cozy library fire and a nearly priceless collection of single malt scotches.

** Please NOTE**

I bought this series months back. I’ve spent the last month reading the four book collection. There is now a five book series with the link below. I will also share each book with you separately, so if you wish to purchase one at a time you have the links.

MY RECOMMENDATION

THE AURA: In book one, we meet Kate Benedict, whose mother appears to her after passing over 6 months prior. Kate suddenly starts seeing auras over some people’s heads, and the clearer the aura, the higher the risk of them dying sooner rather than later. When a friend dies, Kate’s guilt at not being able to stop their death consumes her. Yet, she’s convinced that someone murdered her friend. Kate works to solve two mysteries: how her aura ability works, and who killed her friend? The plot is sound and well written. This book drew me into the series and the characters. I like the protagonist and felt her frustration with her new aura seeing capabilities.

DOUBLE BLIND: Kate continues to see those dark swirling auras over the heads of people who will soon die. The hard part is trying to figure out what they could die from so she can save them. Imagine Kate’s shock, when she sees the aura around the head of the top candidate running for Prime Minister. Now, time is running out for Kate to figure out who the threat is and how to save the candidate from impending death! To make matters worse, Kate’s best friend, Anita, suddenly has an aura. The situation really gets interesting when Kate divulges all to Anita about her strange ability. Anita, a surgeon, thinks Kate needs psychiatric help! Can she save her friend and the candidate?

THE FLORENTINE CYPHER: The most exciting book out of the four begins with Kate leaving work at the architectural firm to meet up with an old friend for a dinner date. Before she can catch a taxi, Kate notices her friend and coworker, Ethan, leaving in a taxi. Even more disturbing is the fact that Ethan has a swirling aura over his head! After a series of strange text messages from Ethan, he vanishes. Kate searches for him in Florence, Italy, where she meets up with his sister, Claire, who also has an aura. Before long, the two are on the run. Look for rare art and antiquities, a rogue Catholic Priest, and lots of twists and turns in this story!

THE SCOTTISH CONNECTION: My favorite book… There’s just something about the Scottish moors. By now, I’m well vested in these characters. Kate and Josh are visiting his Uncle Fergus and the sprawling family mansion. Guess who has an aura? Uncle Fergus. To make matters worse, there is a series of murders. Add to the mystery a ghostly vision, and Kate is up to her eyeballs as she tries to save Josh’s uncle. There is a Russian connection to the late Tsarina that makes this story memorable. I guarantee you will not figure this one out!

I loved this four book series. British mysteries are my favorite. This author creates interesting characters and plots with a few historical twists added in. The paranormal aspects of the aura sightings predicting imminent death were brilliant. If you’re looking for a fun paranormal series to read filled with mystery and suspense, make it this one.

New book! A Greek romantic comedy that tugs at the heartstrings.

Today, I have a great recommendation for you! Amazon bestselling author Effrosyni Moschoudi is launching her new novel, and it’s only 99 cents on preorder.

Effrosyni Moschoudi’s new book, “Running Haunted,” is only $.99 on preorder. Grab your copy today! https://www.amazon.com/Running-Haunted-Greek-romantic-comedy-ebook/dp/B0853CMP1V/

Running Haunted is a romantic comedy that features a playful ghost and mixes sweet romance with delightful paranormal elements. Scroll down for a quick chat with the author, but first, here’s the book description:

Kelly ran a marathon… and wound up running a house. With a ghost in it.

Kelly Mellios is a stunning, athletic woman, who has learned—the hard way—to value herself. Having just finished her first marathon in the alluring Greek town of Nafplio, she bumps into Alex, a gorgeous widower with three underage children, who is desperately looking for a housekeeper.

The timing seems perfect, seeing that Kelly aches to start a new life, and Nafplio seems like the ideal place to settle down. She accepts the position on the spot, but little does she know that Alex’s house has an extra inhabitant that not even the family knows about…

The house is haunted by Alex’s late wife, who has unfinished business to tend to. By using the family pet, a quirky pug named Charlie, the ghost is able to communicate with Kelly and asks her for help. She claims she wants to ensure her loved ones are happy before she departs, but offers very little information about her plans.

Kelly freaks out at first, but gradually finds herself itching to help. It is evident there’s room for improvement in this family… Plus, her growing attraction towards Alex is overpowering…

Will Kelly do the ghost’s bidding? How will it affect her? And just how strange is this pug?

Welcome to my blog, Effrosyni!

Thanks a lot, Colleen. I am thrilled to be here.

Congrats on your new book. I must say, it sounds intriguing! What inspired you to write the story?

When I started writing the story in early 2019, it was meant to be a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. However, my mother was in the midst of a harrowing battle with cancer at the time and, inevitably, this affected my writing… Before I knew it, I was writing a brand new character: the ghost of a mother who cared for her family so much that, even after death, she was reluctant to leave them behind in the midst of their troubles.

My mother passed away three months ago, and I have dedicated the book to her. Even in her toughest and scariest times as she fought this terrible disease, my mother always set aside her needs to ask after my own, worrying how her situation affected my own health physically and mentally.

The spirit of the loving mother in Running Haunted was inspired by my own mother’s high sense of altruism. I hope the book will provide comfort to the readers who have lost a loved one. I know it comforts me, in a strange way, when I read what the Muse has offered.

The backstory about your mother touches my heart. Thank you for sharing. The pics from Nafplio are wonderful. What made you choose this location?

My husband ran a marathon in Nafplio a few years back and I felt it would be fun to include this element in a book. I have visited Nafplio countless times, and it’s a big favorite of mine. It has no less than three forts, one of them built on a tiny isle just off the seafront. No matter how many times you visit the forts, you never tire of their energy and the spectacular sea views they offer.

Nafplio was the first capital of Greece since the Greek War of Independence in 1822 and it has a timeless charm, an incredible energy, and a strong historical feel about it. There is beauty everywhere and thus walking around there is an absolute delight. Out of the blue, you find charming settings that feel like you’ve just emerged into a different century. I thought a place that has so much allure and so many recognizable landmarks would surely make a great setting for a novel. I hope the readers will enjoy reading all about it, both those who are familiar with it, and those who are not!

What are your future plans? Any other new books in the pipeline?

At the moment, my main writing project is the translation of The Amulet into Greek. I’ve been putting off translating one of my books for years as I focused on writing books in English and trying to establish a worldwide brand in the English-speaking world. After publishing seven novels and one short story collection, I feel it’s time to take a break and finally provide something to my family and friends who don’t speak English – they’ve been pestering me for ages for something I wrote that they can read. LOL! Hopefully they won’t be disappointed. And while I’m mainly doing this for them, I also hope to get some new readers among the Greeks in the process. It would be great if I could publish all my books in Greek at some point. That’s a long-term goal, of course.

Best of luck with that, Effrosyni! And you will keep writing in English, surely?

Absolutely. I’ll always write in English. Believe it or not, I am nowhere near as confident writing in Greek! And as for the stories, they keep cropping up in my head, so there’s never a shortage of inspiration. They’re always paranormal or fantasy stories, and the next one will be paranormal again, featuring a ghost or an angel… I have two options, but I haven’t decided yet!

Thank you for being here with us today, Effrosyni. Best of luck with Running Haunted! I’ve already bought my own copy to review at a later date.

Thank you, Colleen, for this opportunity to talk about my work. And for beta-reading the book. Your feedback was really precious to me. I am honored!

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Awaken: Northern Witch 2,” BY AUTHOR, K.S. Marsden, @KSMarsden

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Mark has everything he ever wanted. He is training to be a fully-fledged witch; and he is dating the hottest guy at school.
But events from last winter have set things into motion that he is not prepared for.

Witches, demons, and danger come together to prove that this… this is only the beginning.

MY RECOMMENDATION

“Awaken” immediately picks up where book one, “Winter Trials” left off. You can read that review HERE.

Mark is officially a witch in training. Nana has been working with him and teaching him some basic protection and healing spells. He even learns how to invoke his spirit guide, which was one of my favorite scenes. I was thrilled to find that Nana remains a powerful character in the series.

Damian and Mark’s friendship continues to grow while Harry and Sarah seem to distance themselves from the boys even more. To make matters worse, a misunderstand splits up Mark and his two old friends. Additional difficulties surface when the demon inside of Damien grows more powerful, as he now can influence his decisions.

Mark struggles with all these challenges. There’re disagreements at home. And even when he uses all the magic he knows to help Damien fight against the demon, it’s not enough. Eventually, he’s forced to consult with Nana and her coven because he’s reached the limits of his abilities.

When the end of the year Winter Solstice party doesn’t go off as planned, Mark’s friends from school, and the residents of the town turn against him. Could Mark have tapped into an evil source of black magic?

Kelly Marsden’s writing is filled with magical descriptions and realistic dialogue. Her gift is in describing magic in all its wondrous forms. If she’s not a practitioner in the craft, she should be! Many thanks to the author for the gift of a complimentary copy of this book, which I chose to review.

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this coming of age tale and can’t wait to read the third book. There’s superb storytelling, characters that could be your neighbors (especially in my neighborhood), and suspense! Be prepared for the cliff hanger ending!

COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Eventide,” BY AUTHOR, Mae Clair, @MaeClair1

Featuring Your Next Read!

About this Book

The darkness is coming . . .

The old house near Hode’s Hill, Pennsylvania, is a place for Madison Hewitt to start over—to put the trauma of her husband’s murder, and her subsequent breakdown, behind her. She isn’t bothered by a burial plot on the property, or the mysterious, sealed cistern in the basement. Not at first. Even the presence of cold spots and strange odors could be fabrications of her still troubled mind. But how to explain her slashed tires, or the ominous messages that grow ever more threatening?

Convinced the answer lies in the past, Madison delves into the history of the home’s original owners, only to discover the origin of a powerful evil. An entity that may be connected to a series of gruesome attacks that have left police baffled. No matter where she turns—past or present—terror lingers just a step away, spurred on by a twisted obsession that can only be satisfied through death…

Amazon.com

MY RECOMMENDATION

The third book in Mae Claire’s Hode’s Hill dual timeline Series is called “Eventide.” Wowser! Like the two previous books, this third novel delivers a wallop of a suspenseful tale which wraps up the series in ways I never anticipated! I’m blown away by the writing, the plot, and the ending!

Madison (Maddy) from the second book, has now fully recovered from her ordeal following the violent murder of her husband. She’s ready to get out on her own, and she purchases a house on the outskirts of town. Meanwhile, Jillian, Maddy’s sister, doesn’t think this is the right move for her, causing friction between them.

Once Maddy moves in, she quickly realizes that the Stewart house is haunted. She discovers three gravestones in the family burial plot behind the house. From the dates on the stones, Maddie realizes Sylvia Steward and her son, Nathaniel, both died on the same day. The third grave contain’s Sylvia’s husband, Darrin, who died years before them. What kind of tragedy could have caused a mother and her son to perish on the same day? Just wait… it gets creepier!

Not long after moving in, Maddy encounters a paranormal entity (or two) lurking inside the house who helps her learn about a second Steward son, named Tristan. Whatever caused his death remains a secret waiting to unravel.

Adding to her problems, Maddy realizes her boyfriend, Roth, is not what she expected. His anger issues and possessiveness are only part of the issue.

One day, Maddy finds her tires slashed. Her dead husband hung around with some unsavory characters. Could someone from her past be trying to scare her?

The future meets the past in the second timeline, which puts the reader in the year, 1878. We’re introduced to Hollande Moore, an unmarried woman past her prime, who is obliged to take a live-in position as a companion to Sylvia Steward by order of her brother.

Living in the Steward Mansion becomes unbearable when Hollande discovers Sylvia enjoys inflicting misery upon everyone. Nathaniel, Sylvia’s son, runs the family business. He is a disagreeable man with the same negative attitude as his mother.

Hollande doesn’t know how she will cope with the family until she meets Tristan, the second son who is the exact opposite of his brother. He runs the family business from another location and only comes home in the evening, regaling his mother and Hollande with tales of his adventures. Hollande notices how Sylvia adores Tristan, unlike her other son, Nathaniel.

Eventually, Hollande discovers Nathaniel to be a pleasant man away from the company of his mother. Before she knows it, Hollande and Nathaniel have fallen in love. Suddenly jealous with rage, Sylvia’s madness promises to upend the family.

When the past and the present collide in a trifecta of paranormal occurrences, Maddy stumbles upon an unfathomable evil in the house’s basement. Terrified, she calls in her sister’s boyfriend, Dante, to help her rid the house of the evil within. Together, Dante and the two sisters battle the unknown for the soul of Hode’s Hill. Who will survive?

By Mae Clair

This is one of the most outstanding paranormal series I’ve read. Mae Clair is a master at writing suspense, on a par with Dean Koontz and even Stephen King. In true nail-biter fashion, I couldn’t tear myself away from several of the action scenes, reading late into the night.

Clair doesn’t describe much gore in her novels, which I found appealing. Instead, she strings you along, building the tension until you think you’ll explode from your own impatience to find out what happens next! If you enjoy reading “paranormal-weird” this is the author for you.

I also enjoyed how the character’s personalities flowed throughout the three novels, lending a continuity to the tale of this strange place called Hode’s Hill. I thought I would have a favorite book, but I can honestly say, I loved all three. I’m sad the series is complete.

If you love paranormal fiction filled with a touch of history, romance, and the right amount of things that go bump in the night, you will love the Hode’s Hill series! Just make sure to only read with the light on!

Beware the WITCH HUNTER!

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The time has arrived! Persecuted witches are ready to take a stand against the witch hunters through the most powerful witch of all – The Shadow Witch. In an “unusual” twist, in this book, the witches are the bad guys and the witch hunters are the heroes. Pretty scary if you ask me!

To begin, George “Hunter” Astley finds himself on a reluctant holiday in Venice where he witnesses the attempted murder of Sophie Murphy, by a trio of witches.

Hunter is a seventh-generation witch hunter who works for the MMC – (Malleus Maleficarum Council) where he has the power to apprehend, bind, and kill witches who practice their craft.

Back in England, Sophie tracks Hunter down because she wishes to join the ranks of the witch hunters. Once accepted, she trains with Hunter’s mentor, Brian Lloyd. When Brian dies in a house explosion, Sophie returns to Hunter’s side to continue her education.

Hunter and Sophie fight their attraction to each other for as long as they can, finally succumbing to their desire.

By Halloween, the tensions between the witches and the witch hunters hit a crescendo. When Sophie is possessed by the evil Shadow Witch, she reveals that someone he loves will die. Hunter now fears for Sophie’s life.

With the deaths of many more witch hunters, Hunter vows revenge. Suddenly, the MMC is attacked and eventually the building is destroyed. Chaos ensues, and the witch hunter’s destinies are at stake.

The evilest of witches has once again come into power. Hunter can’t believe the Shadow Witch returned. His grandfather killed her in the 1940s. Yet, everything points to her as the culprit.

Who will win? What becomes of Hunter and Sophie’s love for each other? That and many other mysteries will be revealed in this FREE first book in the series.

This was an excellent read—definitely not a cozy mystery! There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat. Be prepared as the book ends with unresolved questions. I’ll look for Hunter and Sophie’s relationship to be explored further in the subsequent books. I can’t wait to find out what happens next!

COLLEEN’S 2019 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “The Bare Witch Project,” BY AUTHOR, Celeste Hall, @ACelesteHall

Featuring Your New Weekend Countdown to Halloween Read!

About this Book:

Werecats and Witchcraft, A Pagan Romance

Morgan is a wannabe witch with a fear of cats and a traumatic history that puts her straight into the path of trouble. When a large black cat races into her house to escape a dog attack, she considers it just another example of how bad her luck has become. But this was no ordinary cat. Her life was about to be turned upside down by an ultra sexy beast with a few dark secrets of his own.

Can a secretive werecat shifter protect her from a dangerous stalker? Or will she be forced to rely upon the pagan magic her grandmother so strongly believed in, but which Morgan feels insecure using?

This is the first book in a pagan romance series involving werecat shifters and witches. There are some suggestive situations and shapeshifter nudity, but these stories are safe for most mature teens and young adult readers.

Celeste Hall’s Kitty Coven Series:

Book #1: The Bare Witch Project
Book #1.5 Something Wicca This Way Comes (A Short Prequel Story)
Book #2 Love Is A Witch
Book #2.5 A Yowling Yuletide (A Short Christmas Story)
Book #3 Cheaper By The Coven

Book #3.5 The Cat In The Hat (A Short Halloween Story)

Amazon.com

Halloween is right around the corner. What are you reading?

MY RECOMMENDATION:

I enjoy reading cozy paranormal fiction even when it’s not Halloween but at this time of the year, witch lit is devilishly fun!

On the anniversary of her grandmother’s passing, Morgan faces a dilemma when her best friends, Heidi and Rachel show up to ask her to go out drinking with them. Instead, the ever-cautious Morgan stays home to practice the bare witch project.

After her grandmother’s death, the young woman found the altar and ritual tools hidden in the attic. The discovery spurred her on to learn more about her grandmother. Tonight she would complete one of the rituals that she’d found in her grandmother’s Book of Shadows, a personal journal of the older woman’s experiences in the craft.

Heidi and Rachel hesitate to leave their friend alone because of Morgan’s recent break-up with her psychotic boyfriend. As Morgan pushes them out the door, a sleek black cat runs inside, seeking refuge from the pursuit of an angry dog.

Now what? Morgan is afraid of cats. How will she get the interloper out of her house? And, who is this sexy stranger named Leo?

A quick read, “The Bare Witch Project,” kept me engaged in the story. The paranormal aspects of a cat shifting into the form of a man are entertaining, to say the least. There is an unraveling mystery that I suspect will be solved through the series.

This book is listed as FREE on Amazon which is a great way to meet the characters, who are likable and best of all, believable. Enjoy the Autumn Season and jump into this paranormal read!

Colleen’s 2019 #Book #Reviews – “Secret Lady,” (Ladies in Time 3 Book Series)” by Author, @BethTrissel

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

At Lavender House, Evie McIntyre is haunted by the whispers from her bedroom closet. Before she can make sense of their murmurs, the house “warbles” between times and transports her to the Civil War. Past and present have blended, and Evie wishes she’d paid more attention to history. Especially since former Confederate officer, Jack Ramsey, could use a heads up.

Torn between opposing forces, Jack struggles to defend the valley and people he loves. Meeting Evie turns his already tumultuous world upside down. Will solving the mystery of the whispers return her home, and will the handsome scout be by her side?

Against the background of Sheridan’s Burning of the Shenandoah Valley, Jack and Evie fight to save their friends and themselves – or is history carved in stone?

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The last book in the “Ladies in Time” Series ends this trio on a high note. Author, Beth Trissel has created another paranormal romance unlike any other I’ve read. This book is based on the historical data native to her beloved Shenandoah Valley in Virginia where she resides.

The book opens in present-day Virginia, where Evie McIntyre lives with her grandmother in what is known as Lavender House. This house holds the distinction of being one of the only dwellings that survived the burnings by Sheridan’s troops during the Civil War.

Evie works for her Gran as a tour guide at Lavender House, usually garbed in the clothes of the Civil War era. When she begins hearing strange whispers coming from the closet in her room, she realizes the house is more unusual than she could have ever guessed.

One night, Evie falls asleep in the lounge downstairs. She awakens to find herself in a different time and place. Thank goodness for Jack Ramsey, a former Confederate officer. He finds her in the nick of time. Jack is a guide for the Unionist Underground Railroad still grappling with the effects and the brutality of the war.

Evie and Jack form an immediate connection, not realizing how deeply this union will prove to be for them. Jack is stunned to find that Evie is from the future. To protect her, he takes her to a nearby homestead which is owned by a Mennonite couple which ironically, is owned by her grandmother in the future.

This Mennonite family is like a foster family to Jack. He realizes that reputations he must preserve reputations, so he explains to his friends that Evie is his wife. The story progresses to the fateful burning of the Shenandoah Valley which is described in poignant detail. Wait until you reach the end of the book!

The house is the catalyst in this story, bringing Jack and Evie together as if to set right the wrongs of the past. The paranormal elements are delicious and will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I’ve enjoyed every book in this series. HERE is my review of Book One, “Somewhere My Lady.” The second book is called, “The White Lady,” and you can find my review HERE.

Author, Beth Trissel is a master storyteller. If you love romance, history, and the right amount of paranormal suspense and magic, this is the series for you!

The author gifted me with a pre-publication copy of this book without obligation. This review contains my personal opinion after choosing to read the story.

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

“Award-winning author Linda G. Hill brings you the second book in her modern-day Gothic romance series.

Herman Anderson is in love. Thrilled to travel across Canada with her boyfriend as his assistant onstage, she returns to her hometown—the first stop on the Great Dagmaru magic tour. Anticipating a reunion with her brother, instead, she finds her family has moved without a trace.

Stephen Dagmar’s career as a stage magician is taking off. With Herman by his side, his only concern is her father’s dislike for him. But as Herman’s father makes a prediction and resolves to come between them, Stephen’s family curse returns to haunt him.

Darkness descends as the reality of the Dagmar’s incubus bloodline surfaces for the first time in over a generation. Can Herman and Stephen’s relationship survive this new trial? Will Herman survive at all?

A sinful tale of beauty and romance, love and determination, The Magician’s Blood will chill you and leave you breathless for more.”

MY RECOMMENDATION:

The Magician’s Blood is the second novel in The Great Dagmaru Series. I’ve read and reviewed the first book, The Magician’s Curse, HERE.

Let me begin by saying that I could not put this book down! Much like the curse that holds Stephen Dagmar under its control, I tore into this book, reading into the wee hours until finally, the book finally released me from its hold! Be prepared, because Canadian author, Linda G. Hill, has created a paranormal romance like no other.

So, let me tell you what this book possession stuff was all about! At the beginning of The Magician’s Blood, the author reminds us that a demon incubus passed from generation to generation and handed down from father to son, has one sole purpose in life – to seduce women and create offspring. Stephen Dagmar has inherited this curse from his father, which ties his family to their servants, the Currys’ involving some creepy relationships in the true gothic sense of the genre.

Fulfilling the demands of the incubus that runs hot through his blood, Stephen has impregnated his servant, Nina, even though his true love is Herman Anderson. Through all of this drama, it is Herman and Stephen’s love story that propels the action forward.

Meanwhile, Stephen has Nina tucked away in the care of his parents awaiting the birth of his first child. Per the curse, the girl must remain a servant to the Dagmar family. Once she gives birth, a hysterectomy must be performed to ensure Nina’s link to the curse is broken.

Many of the characters from the first book return, presenting a more in-depth look into Stephen’s relationship with Margaret, his manager, and the women who once belonged to Stephen’s coven. Herman’s father plays a critical role in this tale leaving some tantalizing clues as to the magical powers that Herman could very well have inherited from him.

Talk about a double edged sword… It is also revealed that Stephen’s ability to perform magic is a byproduct of the curse. Yikes! Now, the question remains, if they find a cure for the curse, will Stephen retain his magical abilities?

This book does contain explicit sexual encounters. Stephen is a cambion, the offspring of an incubus which drives his sexuality into uncontrollable violent urges. Sex magic erupts at almost every twist and turn.

Yet, for all the love that Stephen and Herman share, the reader can’t help but pick up on the darkness that ripples through these pages. The suspense builds up to a breaking point, leaving the reader breathless. The ending was unexpected and explosive!

My advice? Read book one and get to know the characters. Then, grab a copy of this book before the August 10th release date! The author is offering a special pre-order price on The Magician’s Blood. It’s $2.99 now, but it’ll be going up to $4.99 on August 10th.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. (Actually, I begged asked for a copy because I enjoyed the first book so much).

    The White Lady

*I was given a pre-publication copy of this book by the author for review purposes*

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

Avery Dunham has always been ready to follow her friend, time-traveling wizard, Ignus Burke, on incredible adventures. This time, though, she has serious misgivings. It’s just one week before Christmas, but she cannot get him to change his mind. The usually cool and collected magic-wielding leader is wholly obsessed by the portrait of the White Lady whom he is bent on rescuing.

Almost as soon as they begin their journey, it becomes clear their mission is a trap.

Avery was right: this adventure is not going to be like any other.

MY RECOMMENDATION:

Meet Ignus Burke, independently wealthy wizard and time-traveler extraordinaire who specializes in rescuing lost souls. Along with his two cohorts, Avery Dunham and Stan Guthrie, these fast friends have traveled beyond the veil of magic more times then they can count.

Currently, Ignus is fascinated with the portrait of the White Lady which hangs in the parlor of his Victorian home in historic Staunton, Virginia. There is something about the picture that has piqued his curiosity to the extent of a dangerous obsession.

The White Lady is a portrait of a pale brunette beauty dressed in filmy white. Her age and the time frame of when the painting was completed is shrouded in mystery. So, one day, when Ignus announces to his friends that “The White Lady needs my help,” his declaration is met with skepticism from his friends. Avery is concerned that Ignus has taken his obsession too far. She knows something is off about the whole ordeal. It’s not just womanly intuition either because even Stan has noticed how preoccupied Ignus is with the painting.

The Victorian mansion that is owned by Ignus’ family seems to hold the key to finding out more about the portrait. Ignus can pick up on the energy from the past which swirls about the house and the antiques that were left behind by the previous occupants. To make matters worse, Ignus’ father, who disappeared years ago is somehow connected to the otherworldly allure the White Lady holds over Ignus. And yet, there’s much more family history to unravel and discover.

The adventure begins when the trio scatters caution to the wind by traveling back in time to when the trouble first started with the White Lady.

Fans of Doctor Who will love this adult paranormal time-traveling adventure. Beth Trissel is the master of paranormal fantasy by creating characters you can’t help but love as they are thrust into situations that only the gifted can solve. There’s something for everyone – ghosts, an ancient evil, and even the beginnings of a young romance that blossoms between the pages of the story.

The author shared some exciting facts about the White Lady tradition from her research. Beth Trissel said,

“It (the story) was inspired by the ghostly white lady or white woman lore I’m familiar with in the Shenandoah Valley and surrounding mountains, and farther afield. After researching, I discovered this lore is widespread in American and the UK and dates back centuries. It’s a paranormal ‘thing.'”

I loved this book because it was so unusual and creative. It was a fun read that moved as quickly as the spectral magic that danced on each page. I couldn’t help thinking what a fun Christmas gift this book would make as the setting in the novel takes place just days before the holiday begins. The
White Lady is the perfect book to curl up with under a mound of blankets on a snowy afternoon. Enjoy! ❤

#Fairies, #Myths, & #Magic October Spooktacular Author Spotlight Guest Post – C. S. Boyack, Paranormal Author

091917_2010_FairiesMyth1.png

I’ve brought C. S. Boyack back to share a terrifying story with you that will literally give you the creeps. This one is lots of gory fun!

I know many of you know Craig, but for those of you who don’t, and so you can get a sense of why he writes what he does, please let me introduce you to C. S. Boyack:

I was born in a town called Elko, Nevada. I like to tell everyone I was born in a small town in the 1940s. I’m not quite that old, but Elko has always been a little behind the times. This gives me a unique perspective of earlier times, and other ways of getting by. Some of this bleeds through into my fiction.

I moved to Idaho right after the turn of the century and never looked back. My writing career was born here, with access to other writers and critique groups I jumped in with both feet.

I like to write about things that have something unusual. My works are in the realm of science fiction, paranormal, and fantasy. The goal is to entertain you for a few hours. I hope you enjoy the ride.

“Magpies”

By C. S. Boyack

It’s been two days since I slid off the county road. The wreckage of my car blew the windshield out, and the nights were freezing. I haven’t heard a siren since the wreck. Last night, the flashing blue lights and sound of a snow plow told me any tracks I left got erased.

I managed to dig out some of the clothes I intended to drop at the Salvation Army and pile them around me. I know things are broken, my leg for sure. My left breast is bloody where the seatbelt caught, and the airbag fried my hair. I have a deep cough, despite only being able to take shallow breaths.

A deep thud hit on the roof. The snow knocked off branches and pinecones all over the forest. The clunking moved across the roof, and a magpie looked down through the hole where the windshield should have been.

It spread its wings and glided to the car hood, crow hopping until it reached a beam of sunlight. It ruffled its feathers and soaked up the warmth.

“Shoo!” My voice croaked from all the yelling I did. I broke into a wet cough that tasted of blood.

The bird turned my direction. “Sorry lady, but today is the day. We’ve been watching you.”

“Go away. Get some help if you can talk like that.”

“Don’t work that way. Birds have a code. We can’t start eating until you’re gone, and we can’t fly for help.”

A shiver, more visceral than the frigid temperature deserved, ran through my body. This beautiful black and white bird intended to eat me. I wriggled deeper into my pile of used clothing. “Please go away.”

“I feel for you, lady. Really, I do. Winter’s a tough time out here, and food is scarce. Some of us starve to death every year. When a gift like you shows up, we’re risking our lives to just go away.”

“What about my life? How can you be so callous about it?”

“I didn’t wreck your thing-a-ma-jig there. It really is unfortunate. I only hope you go before dark. After dark, something else might find you, and there would be precious little left for me.”

“What comes after dark?”

“The bears are all sleeping, but wolves are always around. They won’t even wait for you to move on. Nasty, brutal creatures, they just start eating the minute they show up.”

“Are they nearby?”

“I didn’t see any when I flew in this morning.”

Another magpie landed with a spray of snow. “Am I number two then?” she asked. “I was heading for the landfill and remembered the wreck. Thought it might be nearly time. I’ll tell you, something fresh would do me a world of good.”

“Winters seem to get tougher every year, don’t they?” number one said. “Have you been to the roadkill on the edge of town. Someone hit a nice young doe.”

“All cleaned out, I’m afraid. A coyote got the last decent bit two nights ago.” She turned to me. “I don’t mean to rush you, dear, but do you think you’ll be much longer?”

“You’re awful. Waiting for my life to end. I don’t want to be eaten. Go away.”

“None of us want that,” number one said. “There isn’t much we can do about it after we’re gone.” He turned to the second magpie. “If I dropped over dead, would you eat me?”

“Absolutely,” she said.

“Would you start before I passed?”

“Of course not. I’m not a wolverine. Birds have a code.”

“See, lady. We’re back to the code again. You have nothing to worry about from us. We won’t hurt you.”

A larger thump landed on the roof. “What was it? I say hypothermia.” A raven hopped onto the car hood and stood beside the first magpie.

“It hasn’t happened yet,” the female said. “Besides, I think it’s going to be from shock.”

“You’re both nuts,” the first magpie said. “She’s got some bad injuries. I think she’ll bleed out internally first.”

“Oh come on,” the female magpie said. “She’s been talking to us. That’s a sign of shock.”

“I’m not saying she isn’t in shock. I just think the cold will take her first,” the Raven said. “Some nice internal blood clots would be tasty though.”

“She’ll probably have some of those too, but I still say shock takes her.”

“I’m still here,” I said. “I’m scared, cold, and in pain. Please go away.”

“Can’t do that,” the Raven said. “What you’re going through is tragic. We all respect that. That’s why birds have a code.”

“Are you sure I’ll go today? Someone has to be looking for me.”

The first magpie said, “Oh yeah, you look bad. There are bruises all over your face, blood in your hair, and you’re so pale it will probably happen before noon.”

“I’m not in any pain.”

“That’s the first step toward hypothermia.” The Raven puffed up his chest.

“What’s it like? You must have seen it before.” I started coughing violently.

“There’s that internal bleeding I told you about,” the first magpie said.

“We really don’t know, dear,” magpie number two said. “None of us have ever died before.”

“They say there is a light at the end of a tunnel, and I just wondered. Is it that way, or is it darkness? Maybe there really is a grim reaper.”

“We’d all like to know, lady,” the raven said.

I nodded off and jolted awake. The sun was higher, and snowmelt dripped off the highest branches. Another magpie perched in a bush, and a second raven on a low branch. “A regular damned smorgasbord for all of you. What you’re doing is terrible.”

I nodded off and snapped awake twice more. Each time there were more birds. Finally, I nodded off and felt warmth returning. My pain lessened, and the pain in my chest went away. Then I heard the first magpie.

“Let’s call it. Time to get ours before the coyotes arrive.”

This story was creepy and came from C. S. Boyack’s book, The Experimental Notebook of C. S. Boyack, Part II. It is his second collection of short stories and micro-fiction. Every story can be read in a single session. This time there are a few tributes to the pulp era. Stories include science fiction, paranormal, and horror.
