COLLEEN’S 2020 #BOOK #REVIEWS – “Running Haunted,” BY AUTHOR, Effrosyni Moschoudi , @FrostieMoss

Featuring Your Next Weekend Read!

About this Book

Kelly ran a marathon… and wound up running a house. With a ghost in it.

Kelly Mellios is a stunning, athletic woman, who has learned—the hard way—to value herself. Having just finished her first marathon in the alluring Greek town of Nafplio, she bumps into Alex, a gorgeous widower with three underage children, who is desperately looking for a housekeeper.

The timing seems perfect, seeing that Kelly aches to start a new life, and Nafplio seems like the ideal place to settle down. She accepts the position on the spot, but little does she know that Alex’s house has an extra inhabitant that not even the family knows about…

The house is haunted by Alex’s late wife, who has unfinished business to tend to. By using the family pet, a quirky pug named Charlie, the ghost is able to communicate with Kelly and asks her for help. She claims she wants to ensure her loved ones are happy before she departs, but offers very little information about her plans.

Kelly freaks out at first, but gradually finds herself itching to help. It is evident there’s room for improvement in this family… Plus, her growing attraction towards Alex is overpowering…

Will Kelly do the ghost’s bidding? How will it affect her? And just how strange is this pug?

MY RECOMMENDATION

I read this book while in lockdown during the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic. It was just the thing to take my mind off the worries of the world. This author has created a heartwarming family friendly romance with a paranormal twist that you will remember long after finishing the book!

After a chance encounter, Kelly takes the housekeeping job offered by Alex. At first, Kelly does not understand what she has taken on in the management of a house, three boys, and a pug with a mind of his own, including the boy’s busy father.

Traumatized by the death of their mother, each of the boys tries to deal with their loss. Alex is suffering, as well. More than anything, this family needs to heal and move on, but circumstances haven’t allowed them to move forward.

Kelly exhibits exceptional strength of character and empathy in her assessment of what this family needs. She begins by cooking healthy food, increasing their play time and exercise, and she takes the time to listen to the boys and their problems.

One morning, shortly after Kelly’s arrival, the bewitching smell of candy floss beckons to her from inside Alex’s bedroom closet. She finds a pile of women’s clothes belonging to his late wife. But it is the colorful scarf on the top of the pile that grabs her attention.

Kelly realizes the scent isn’t real. Instead, she knows it’s the result of a special gift she inherited from her late grandmother. Kelly can communicate with the spirits of the dead. And today, she senses that by not letting go of his wife, Alex holds back her spirit from total deliverance. At least to Kelly, that’s what the smell suggests. Alex keeps his dead wife’s spirit contained within the house.

Meanwhile, Charlie the Pug has warmed up to Kelly. But it’s when the dog alerts her to issues with the boys, she begins to take notice.

One morning, Kelly finds the scarf laying on her bed, where Charlie had slept the night before. Could the dog have brought the scarf to her? Kelly knows something is happening in this house when Charlie brings her a string of pearls belonging to the boy’s mother. Could the Pug receive messages from beyond the grave? Was Alex’s dead wife trying to contact Kelly?

Set in the historical town of Nafplio, Greece, Effrosyni Moschoudi writes about the beloved places that bring personality to her characters. “Running Haunted” will leave you believing in the power of love.

Welcome to my blog, Effrosyni!

Thanks a lot, Colleen. I am thrilled to be here.

Congrats on your new book. I must say, it sounds intriguing! What inspired you to write the story?

When I started writing the story in early 2019, it was meant to be a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy. However, my mother was in the midst of a harrowing battle with cancer at the time and, inevitably, this affected my writing… Before I knew it, I was writing a brand new character: the ghost of a mother who cared for her family so much that, even after death, she was reluctant to leave them behind in the midst of their troubles.

My mother passed away three months ago, and I have dedicated the book to her. Even in her toughest and scariest times as she fought this terrible disease, my mother always set aside her needs to ask after my own, worrying how her situation affected my own health physically and mentally.

The spirit of the loving mother in Running Haunted was inspired by my own mother’s high sense of altruism. I hope the book will provide comfort to the readers who have lost a loved one. I know it comforts me, in a strange way, when I read what the Muse has offered.

The backstory about your mother touches my heart. Thank you for sharing. The pics from Nafplio are wonderful. What made you choose this location?

My husband ran a marathon in Nafplio a few years back and I felt it would be fun to include this element in a book. I have visited Nafplio countless times, and it’s a big favorite of mine. It has no less than three forts, one of them built on a tiny isle just off the seafront. No matter how many times you visit the forts, you never tire of their energy and the spectacular sea views they offer.

Nafplio was the first capital of Greece since the Greek War of Independence in 1822 and it has a timeless charm, an incredible energy, and a strong historical feel about it. There is beauty everywhere and thus walking around there is an absolute delight. Out of the blue, you find charming settings that feel like you’ve just emerged into a different century. I thought a place that has so much allure and so many recognizable landmarks would surely make a great setting for a novel. I hope the readers will enjoy reading all about it, both those who are familiar with it, and those who are not!

What are your future plans? Any other new books in the pipeline?

At the moment, my main writing project is the translation of The Amulet into Greek. I’ve been putting off translating one of my books for years as I focused on writing books in English and trying to establish a worldwide brand in the English-speaking world. After publishing seven novels and one short story collection, I feel it’s time to take a break and finally provide something to my family and friends who don’t speak English – they’ve been pestering me for ages for something I wrote that they can read. LOL! Hopefully they won’t be disappointed. And while I’m mainly doing this for them, I also hope to get some new readers among the Greeks in the process. It would be great if I could publish all my books in Greek at some point. That’s a long-term goal, of course.

Best of luck with that, Effrosyni! And you will keep writing in English, surely?

Absolutely. I’ll always write in English. Believe it or not, I am nowhere near as confident writing in Greek! And as for the stories, they keep cropping up in my head, so there’s never a shortage of inspiration. They’re always paranormal or fantasy stories, and the next one will be paranormal again, featuring a ghost or an angel… I have two options, but I haven’t decided yet!

Thank you for being here with us today, Effrosyni. Best of luck with Running Haunted! I’ve already bought my own copy to review at a later date.

Thank you, Colleen, for this opportunity to talk about my work. And for beta-reading the book. Your feedback was really precious to me. I am honored!

Colleen’s 2018 #Book #Reviews – “The Raven Witch of Corfu, (Episode 1-4)” by Author, Effrosyni Moschoudi

book review logo

IN THE AUTHOR’S WORDS:

A terrible evil lurks in the mountain…

Lizzie is not your average tourist. She may have just arrived on the idyllic Greek island of Corfu, but her mind is not on having a good time. Far from it, Lizzie has a daunting task to undertake: to claim back her twin brother who was kidnapped twenty years earlier on her previous visit. In a cave. By an evil witch.

When Lizzie sees her brother again, she receives the shock of her life. The witch has tricked her… As if this weren’t enough, Stamatis, a handsome local, steals her heart to complicate her life even further…

“It’s a step up from Mills and Boon – much more Mary Stewart than Barbara Cartland, with a bit of Gothic horror and Harry Potter-esque magic in the mix. And it’s certainly a page-turner.” ~Hilary Whitton Paipeti, author of In the Footsteps of Lawrence Durrell and Gerald Durrell in Corfu

Set in the enchanting village of Messonghi, this highly imaginative Greek fantasy romance will intrigue and uplift you, making it feel like you’re on the island of Corfu, experiencing it all with your senses. It is also guaranteed to leave you longing for a visit to your closest Greek restaurant!”

MY RECOMMENDATION:

In “The Raven Witch of Corfu,” Effrosyni Moschoudi has created a romantic mystery fraught with magic and danger instilled with the delicious Corfu culture that seems to explode from every page. She has carved out four books, reasonably priced, that I guarantee will keep you guessing until the end.

The protagonist, Lizzie, arrives in Corfu with the sole intention of finding out the truth behind her brother’s disappearance twenty years ago. Her memories are fuzzy, but deep down she knows that an evil witch stole her brother from her. Her parents never believed her description of the events, which has left her estranged from their friendship and love now that she is an adult.

Alone in Corfu, Lizzie decides that on the anniversary of her brother’s disappearance, she will revisit the cave where he was tragically taken away from her. Greeted by a conspiracy of ravens who act as the gatekeepers to the evil witch’s realm, Lizzie relives the events from twenty years ago. Be prepared because this witch has more tricks up her sleeve than Lizzie can fathom.

In the midst of the mystery surrounding her bother’s disappearance, Lizzie meets, Stamatis, a widower, whom she finds to be irresistible. But, she didn’t come to Corfu to find a man, she came to find her brother. As their friendship evolves, I couldn’t help but cheer the couple on. They seem perfect for each other but in romantic Corfu, who knows?

The young woman does her best to deal with all the twists and turns the wicked witch throws at her. If it were not for the help from Stamatis and some other friends, the mystery would never be solved. The ending blew me away and left me pleasantly surprised.

I’m a huge fan of the popular PBS series, “The Durrell’s in Corfu,” so when the author asked me to beta read the entire series, I was thrilled beyond words. I loved the story so much, I had to share my thoughts.

Having read many of this author’s other novels, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this book. What I found was a romantic mystery that left me breathless waiting to discover what happens next.

If you love a little mystery with your romance including a touch of the paranormal, you will enjoy “The Raven Witch of Corfu.” It’s a great read.

Today, I am proud to introduce you to an author who writes women’s fiction and paranormal fantasy/romance, Effrosynsi Moschoudi. Effrosynsi lives in Greece and many of her novels transport you to the Greek Isles. Be prepared to be swept off your feet. I have luxuriated in the Greek sunshine through her writing, and it is an experience you won’t want to miss.

By the way, I have read her Lady of the Pier series and fell in love with her characters. These stories transport you back in time and into the future bringing the reader to an explosive ending. Click the links to read my reviews: The Ebb, The Flow, and The Storm.

Effrosynsi’s new book is called The Amulet, a romantic supernatural comedy featuring a guardian angel! Which brings us to the subject at hand – Guardian Angels.

“Messages from Above,” by Effrosyni Mochoudi

The word ‘angel’ originates from the Greek ‘aggelos,’ which means ‘messenger.’ Many angel sightings have been recorded in the Bible; these angels appeared before the faithful to offer messages that provided assistance or hope.

Actually, angels have been recorded in the scriptures of many faiths around the world. Today, especially with the use of the Internet, it is very easy to learn more about them. People are sharing online their own testimonies, whether these involve proper angelic encounters or messages received by their angels.

They say that every one of us has a guardian angel, and I believe it firmly to be so. I have always had this intense feeling that I am being protected, for example. In my travels as a youngster around Greece and Europe, whenever I needed assistance locals would come along out of the blue to help me out without me even asking. For example, if I needed an interpreter, to lift something heavy or if I was in danger of getting stranded somewhere.

However, one particular incident stands out because it didn’t entail the assistance of a human being and, to this day, I cannot explain it unless I put it down to an angel or two!

It happened on a wintry night in London back in the 1990s. I had just watched a marvelous show in a West End theatre and was running to the bus station to catch the last bus of the day to Hythe, Kent where I was staying at the time.

It had been snowing that day, and there was ice on the roads. As I was running, all of a sudden I slipped, and then, everything switched to slow motion. I felt myself getting airborne, my body tilted sideways, my legs rising up to be almost parallel to the ground. Panic struck at my heart as I realized that I was going to fall hard and hurt myself badly.

At that point, I remember thinking with dread that not only was I not going to catch that bus home after all, but that I was probably going to spend the night in a hospital bed with a broken limb or two…

“And then, something incredible happened.”

Just like that, and even though my legs were parallel to the ground, somehow, I landed on my feet again! It felt like an invisible hand had just turned me upright!

Stunned, but with the urgency still at hand, I kept running. I am pleased to say I did catch that bus, but the mystery I never got to solve. Over time I’ve thought about it many times, and the only logical explanation I can give is that my angels came to my aid that night.

That was the only time an angel came to my rescue directly. As I said earlier, they normally help me by getting kind people to offer assistance instead.

But this doesn’t mean my angels stop there. Oh no. Often, they give me messages out of the blue. More often than not, these come on the days that I feel upset, or worried about something. This is their way to confirm their presence around me and, of course, it gives me strength every time. I am not talking about the typical white feather that you may have heard of, and which I often encounter on those days even in the sea while I swim!

My angels’ messages often come unexpectedly when I read something on my computer and have the radio or the TV playing at the same time. This is a wonderful way to get messages from your angels, by the way! The odd word will come to you from both sources at the same time, i.e. you will hear it on the radio or the TV at the exact moment you’ll be reading it on your computer or book or whatever. But you mustn’t look for it. Just have the sound playing in the background as you read, forget about it, and see what happens in a while. It also helps if you take a moment beforehand to sit quietly to talk to your angels, present the problem, and ask them to offer guidance.

Other than the above, my angels love to communicate with me by touching my face. That said, it doesn’t feel like a touch – it’s like an electric pulse that comes and goes in a split second. I get to feel it over my eye or the back of my neck most times, and I know it’s them. I always take a moment to say thank you when this happens.

Last, but certainly not least, my angels sometimes make small things move around the house when my attention is really required!

The first time this happened was three years ago, and it really freaked me out. Yet, it was quite amazing, so I feel compelled to share this with you today:

That morning, I was working on my computer at home. Before my desk, I have a pinboard. A post-it note that I had pinned on it days earlier suddenly dropped and landed on my desk before me the right way up and the right way round. It felt like it had been put there for me to read. In this note, I had written a quote (a paraphrase from Rumi), which read: “I am not a drop in the ocean. I am the ocean in a drop.”

Astounded, I read it back to myself as it lay before me as if put there by an invisible hand, and I knew that moment it was an angelic message that spoke about inner strength. Here, I must explain that I work in a windowless room. All the windows in my house were closed at the time, so this couldn’t have been caused by a draft. No music was playing either – so this wasn’t a case of sound waves causing vibrations.

A week later my shoulder began to hurt more from an injury I had suffered earlier on. The pain kept increasing so I went to the doc and the diagnosis was frozen shoulder. The next five months were harrowing for me and the pain indescribable, especially at night. I slept very little during these five months. Every night I wandered around the house for hours like a zombie seeking a modicum of comfort as I rubbed heat-inducing cream on my shoulder and cried my eyes out.

Throughout those five months, somehow, despite the upset and the exhaustion, I didn’t miss a single day at my desk writing, blogging, and promoting my work – even on the worst days when I could only type with one hand.

Of course, during that difficult time, the angelic message I had received kept reminding me how strong I am. I could see then in hindsight that my angels had warned me things were going to get tough so I could brace myself. I am forever grateful for that message because it told me I wasn’t going to go through the hardship alone and that truly saw me through.

As I stated earlier, the first time something moved in front of me of its own volition it really freaked me out. Since then, my angels have communicated with me in the same manner on two other occasions – in both cases to warn me that tough times for me and my loved ones were about to start. By now, I don’t get spooked anymore when things move inexplicably; I just feel really grateful for this communication, and it always fills me with awe.

These messages from my angels have inspired me to write The Amulet, a delightful romantic comedy/paranormal romance that even features the aforementioned pinboard incident!

Some people see or hear them, others feel their touch, and others perceive their presence through wonderful aromas, like the scent of roses when there are none around. Here’s a bit about Effrosyni:

“Effrosyni Moschoudi was born and raised in Athens, Greece. As a child, she loved to sit alone in her garden scribbling rhymes about flowers, butterflies, and ants. Today, she writes novels for people who love all things Greek. Her historical romance, The Ebb, is an ABNA Q-Finalist. Her novels are Amazon bestsellers, having hit #1 several times, and are available in Kindle and paperback format. The paperbacks can be ordered on Amazon or at any bookstore or library.

Effrosyni lives in a quaint seaside town near Athens with her husband Andy and a naughty cat called Felix, but her mind forever drifts to her beloved island of Corfu. Felix loves to use her pot plants as lounge chairs and to nap under the sun in ridiculous poses.”
