Welcome to the Tanka Tuesday Poetry Recap featuring the work of poets from around the globe. If you would like to participate in this challenge, you can learn the rules on the menu item called Colleen’s Weekly Tanka Tuesday Guidelines.
PLEASE NOTE: Don’t forget to count your syllables. Use this site: howmanysyllables.com. Click on the workshop tab. Then, copy and paste your poem into the box, and click “count syllables” at the bottom.
For some, this challenge is a way to learn more about writing in English, even though it’s the American version. English is a second language to many of our participants.
I also understand that accent and inflection play a key roll in the way you say certain words and this will change the syllable count. Here is my compromise: Please try to get as close to the syllable count as possible when writing these syllabic forms of poetry.
This challenge is not for free-verse poetry. ❤
Each week, I like to highlight a poet who I call the Poet of the Week, who has shared an exceptional message, or shown an impassioned creativity through words or form. Poetry is all about perception, so don’t be shocked if you don’t feel the same way about a poem that I do. ❤
This week, I’ve chosen Ben and his mistress, Bernadette, from her blog, Mucky Boots, and Flawless Paws, who graciously translates Ben’s dog poetry into English for us all to enjoy. Ben is a Border Collie with extraordinary poetic skill. Click HERE to find ALL of Ben’s dog poetry.
This week, Ben took on a Garland Cinquain. This is one of my favorite forms written in a series of six cinquains in which the last is formed of lines from the preceding five, typically line one from stanza one, line two from stanza two, and so on.
You know what I love the most in this garland cinquain? The humor. Not all of our poetry has to be serious. It’s therapeutic to poke fun at life, especially when it feels heavy. Notice Ben’s references to politics? Isn’t that on everyone’s mind these days, be it American or British policies? There’s plenty to fuss over in our lives, and when you’re a dog… well, doesn’t that leave even more to worry about?
Experiment with the garland cinquain form. Have fun. You know, like Ben does! ❤

WOW, WOW, WOW (Whoof oh whoof…) What a proud dog I am. Thank you so much Colleen. It is a confusing, sometimes frightening world for us and it got worse with the election of that man in your country. Did you know there had been dogs in the white house for 150 years till he came along. I wrote a blog about it at the time. https://wp.me/p5I1Dd-iC
I do my best to cope with it by a bit of humour and, of course, writing poetry!
