Crafting Poetry One Syllable at a Time
Welcome to the Tanka Tuesday Poetry Recap featuring the work of poets from around the globe. If you would like to participate in this challenge, you can learn the rules on the menu item called Colleen’s Weekly Tanka Tuesday Guidelines.
I have an idea that has been rolling around in my brain for awhile, and I’d like to know what you guys think.
I would like to compile a book of poetry using the Poet of the Week winners that we could sell on Amazon, for a nominal fee, with the proceeds going to a charity or to the Carrot Ranch Literary Community, which I belong to. This would be a great way for many of our poets to be published. It would also be a way for participants to purchase the book as a collection or keepsake.
Please share your thoughts in the comments. If we choose to do this, I would start compiling our poetry starting in 2019, with the publication of the book in early 2020. This way, I could have a template set up where I could add your poetry weekly.
Let’s say you’re interested. Here’s what I would need:
- I would need a signed agreement from the poet that you are donating your poem if you choose to do this.
- I would need a short bio with a link to your blog to be included with your poem.
We have plenty of time to think about this… I just want to know if you are interested. I would donate my time to compile the book (Kindle and paperback versions), and upload to Amazon.
**OR**
I could compile a PDF that everyone could have for free. Up to you. Please tell me what you think. ❤
~Colleen~
Each week, I like to highlight a poet who I call the Poet of the Week, who has shared an exceptional message, or shown an impassioned creativity through words or form. Poetry is all about perception, so don’t be shocked if you don’t feel the same way about a poem that I do. ❤
This week, I’ve chosen D. Avery, from her blog, Shift & Shake, as the Poet of the Week, for her Tanka poem, “Green Magic.”
I like the rhythm of the words and the picture they paint in my mind. Notice how her synonym choice compliments the meaning of her poem.
This poem is in the correct Tanka format, written from the perspective of the poet. The last line is pure magic.
Also, read this poem starting with the last line and moving forward. If you can read a Tanka forward and backward, it is a true Tanka poem.

D.’s poem was wonderful. Great choice, Colleen. I don’t have many poems to contribute, but I’d be delighted if you wanted to include one or more in a book. Wonderful idea. Now… I have some poetry to read.

I think it’s a great idea Colleen (but you know it would be a lot of work for you…) There is wonderful work every week, and it would be good to share it with the world and also do some good. (K)
